Earth Day 2016

A few points of departure for discussion in class today:

(1) Ska de la Tierra (song)

(a) we did not listen first, we just looked at the lyrics and translated/discussed with the audio off. While the song goes fast, this first look at the lyrics is pretty easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyggC2X96To

zoom(b) This matching game is Spanish audio to Spanish text so that students get to hear her voice before actually viewing the video. After matching I chose a student to translate all of the lyrics. We do this several times to acquaint ourselves further with the song.

(c) We watch this version of the video, which has excellent images matching the principal lyrics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqMrxAo4hcQ

(2) Video “Man”. A bit disturbing, but really gets to the idea that we should be thoughtful about how we use natural resources. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfGMYdalClU

Now let´s focus on why we love the natural world:
(3) Los 30 lugares más bonitos del mundo

We sat in quiet awe as we watched this video.

(4) Picture talk of some of my vacation photos (Macchu Picchu, Patagonia, Costa Rica, Norway, Hawaii… all beautiful scenes). Lots of CI here!

  1. Las fotos me hacen pensar en las aventuras hechas y por hacer. Bravo caballero. Sigue en la lucha tanto al respeto a la enseñanza como en la vida. Vale la pena.

  2. Mike,

When I open the – this matching game (http://www.mrpeto.com/letras/tierra1/jigsound1.html) it is so small that I can’t read the words. Is there a way to download it and make it bigger?

Great ideas. I’ve never done anything for Earth Day before.

Are you joining us in San Diego next Saturday?

    • Hi David,

I wanted to go, but that weekend is the once a month that I get to visit my wife on the East Coast. I have some exciting news though: we are bringing Ben Slavic to the IE during late August and will have about 10 spaces available for teachers outside of my district to attend. I am sending some flyers to Edward Stanko. I used to attend Doug Stone´s monthly group in Orange and I want to touch base with them before the end of the year, so if you show up at their meeting in the end of May then I´ll see you there.

This music activity is using a freeware program that has degraded over the years as the internet has evolved, but still works if you manually increase the zoom of the browser. Here is a graphic showing how to do it in Chrome: https://mrpeto.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/zoom1.jpg

I featured the same program in a lesson that I taught before watching Cajas de cartón, you can see how I normally use the music clips in my class in this post: https://mrpeto.wordpress.com/2016/04/14/casas-de-carton-the-song-played-in-voces-inocentes/
